What is covered by a standard residential insurance policy?

There are many different types of homeowners, or residential, insurance policies in use across the U.S. today and the majority of policies contain coverage for these four important types of coverage:

1. DWELLING:

This part of the policy pays to repair or rebuild your home.  Garages, sheds, gazebos, etc. are often covered up to a limited percentage (usually 10%) of your dwelling coverage.

2. PERSONAL PROPERTY:

Imagine your roof is ripped off and your house is lifted from it’s foundation; turn it upside-down and shake it.  Nearly anything that falls out is probably considered personal property.  Expensive items like jewelry, furs, fine arts, collectibles should also be insured to their appraised values to guarantee that their replacement is covered in full in case of a loss.

3. LIABILITY:

This part of the policy pays on behalf of the insured all sums he/she is legally obligated to pay because of bodily injury and property damage to others.

4. LOSS OF USE:

This coverage pays for increased expenses in order to maintain your normal standard of living after suffering a loss.  This includes, but is not limited to, your hotel/rent bills, restaurant bills, lost rent, and laundry bills. This coverage is usually 20-30% of the dwelling coverage.
